What the card actually covers, what it doesn’t, and the things people still get wrong about it — from the RTO that issues them.

No printed expiry — but there’s a catch nobody reads.
A White Card has no expiry date. What it has is a currency rule: if you’re out of the construction industry for a continuous period of two or more years, the card is no longer current and you’ll need to redo CPCWHS1001. Working even occasionally in construction keeps it alive. So the card doesn’t expire — your absence does.
Not in Queensland — and any provider saying otherwise is selling you a problem.
Workplace Health and Safety Queensland requires general construction induction training to be delivered by a live trainer. Self-paced, click-through White Card courses are not permitted for QLD. A live virtual classroom is fine — that’s how Nexa delivers it, 7 days a week, to anyone located in Queensland — but there’s a real trainer on the other end, and a WHSQ-mandated written, oral and practical assessment.
It works everywhere.
CPCWHS1001 is a nationally recognised unit. A White Card issued in Queensland is valid on construction sites in every Australian state and territory — and the reverse is true too. What matters is that the card was issued by a registered training organisation against the current unit.
Probably not.
Old QLD Blue Cards remain valid — unless you’ve been out of the industry for two or more continuous years, or you’ve lost the card and can’t get a replacement. In either of those cases, it’s a fresh CPCWHS1001. Otherwise, keep carrying it with pride.
“The assessment is hard.” It’s open-book — your materials and the QLD WHS Act stay available throughout, and your trainer covers everything before you’re assessed.
“You need construction experience.” None required. The course exists precisely because you haven’t set foot on a site yet.
“Student visa holders can’t do it.” They can — eligible student visa holders complete White Card training under the ESOS (Exempt Courses) Instrument 2021, as long as they’re physically in Queensland with the standard ID and USI requirements.
“Lost card means redoing the course.” No — your original RTO can issue a replacement, or you can apply to WHSQ with your Statement of Attainment. If you trained with Nexa, email admin@nexa.edu.au and we’ll sort it.
“You wait weeks for the card.” Your Statement of Attainment with White Card number is issued the same day — usable for site inductions immediately. The physical card follows in the mail the next business day.
