HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid

Learn to respond to any emergency with confidence — nationally recognised first aid training with practical, hands-on assessment in Brisbane.

Course details

This nationally recognised course gives you the skills and confidence to provide a first aid response to adults, children, and infants in the workplace or community.

HLTAID011 covers a broad range of first aid scenarios — from cardiac emergencies and CPR to fractures, bleeding, burns, envenomation, and medical conditions like asthma, anaphylaxis, stroke, and diabetes. It is suitable for anyone who may need to provide first aid, whether at work, at home, or in the community.

All practical training and assessment aligns with the latest guidelines from the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other leading Australian clinical bodies. You'll learn how to recognise emergencies, respond effectively, and provide care until professional help arrives.

This course includes HLTAID009 (Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and HLTAID010 (Provide Basic Emergency Life Support).

Practical assessment: During the face-to-face workshop, you will demonstrate your ability to safely and effectively manage simulated emergency scenarios. This will involve:

  • Demonstrating the full DRSABCD emergency response sequence including recovery position
  • Performing uninterrupted adult and infant CPR for a minimum of 2 minutes each (at least 5 cycles of 30:2)
  • Attaching and following the prompts of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

  • Responding to at least one workplace or community contextualised scenario where you have no prior knowledge of the casualty's condition
  • Providing a verbal handover report to emergency services using the IMISTAMBO or ISBAR format
  • Completing incident documentation
  • Participating in a post-incident debrief and evaluation of own performance

All assessments are conducted in a supportive environment with guidance from your assessor. You will have opportunities to practise each skill before being assessed.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) recommends that CPR competence (which is a core skill of this course), be refreshed at least every 12 months to stay current with best practice and guidelines. Because competency changes over time and requires regular updating, Nexa Training views RPL (which might accept older evidence) as not suitable for ensuring candidates have current, up-to-date First Aid and CPR skills.

Accordingly RPL is NOT offered to candidates of this course.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should complete this course?

HLTAID011 is suitable for anyone who may need to provide first aid in the workplace or community. It is commonly completed by workers across all industries to meet workplace health and safety requirements, and by individuals who want the skills to respond to emergencies at home or in public.

What is the difference between HLTAID011 and HLTAID012?

HLTAID011 (Provide First Aid) is the general first aid course suitable for all workplaces. HLTAID012 (Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting) includes everything in HLTAID011, plus additional training specific to infants and children in education and care settings. If you work in childcare, kindergarten, or schools, you may need HLTAID012 instead.

How long does the course take?

The course includes approximately 4 hours 30 minutes of online pre-course learning and a face-to-face practical workshop of approximately 6 hours 40 minutes, for a total of around 11 hours. You must complete the course within 3 months of commencing.

How long is the certification valid?

Your HLTAID011 Statement of Attainment is valid for 3 years. The CPR component (HLTAID009) must be refreshed every 12 months, as recommended by the Australian Resuscitation Council. Some employers or regulators may require more frequent refresher training.

What certification will I receive?

On successful completion, you will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid. This includes HLTAID009 (Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and HLTAID010 (Provide Basic Emergency Life Support).

Do I need to be physically fit?

You need to be able to perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on adult and infant manikins on the floor, and manoeuvre a person into the recovery position. This involves sustained kneeling, bending, and physical effort over a full training day. If you have any injuries or conditions that may affect this, contact us before enrolling.

Is RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) available?

RPL is not offered for this course. The Australian Resuscitation Council recommends that CPR competence — a core skill of this course — be refreshed every 12 months. Because competency standards change over time, Nexa Training considers RPL unsuitable for ensuring candidates have current, up-to-date first aid and CPR skills.

What do I need to bring to the practical session?

Bring a valid photo ID, wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe footwear suitable for physical activity (you will be kneeling and working on the floor), and ensure your online pre-course learning is completed before attending.

Where is the practical training held?

Face-to-face practical training is delivered at our training centre in Brisbane, Queensland. 1/11 Buchanan Road, Banyo, 4104

How much does the course cost?

The course is $120 (GST free), which includes all online learning materials, face-to-face training, assessment, and your Statement of Attainment.

Is this the right course if I work in childcare or education?

If you work in childcare, kindergarten, schools, outside-school-hours care, or family day care, you likely need HLTAID012 (Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting) instead, which meets ACECQA requirements. View our HLTAID012 course here.
