First Aid in an Education and Care Setting

HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting

Get qualified to provide first aid in childcare, schools, and education settings — with practical, hands-on training in Brisbane.

Course details

This nationally recognised course gives education and care workers the skills and confidence to provide first aid to infants, children, and adults.

HLTAID012 is specifically designed for people working in childcare centres, kindergartens, schools, outside-school-hours care, and family day care. It meets the requirements of the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) for approved first aid, asthma, and anaphylaxis training under the Education and Care Services National Law and Regulations.

All practical training aligns with the latest guidelines from the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other leading Australian clinical bodies. You'll learn how to recognise emergencies, respond effectively, and provide care until professional help arrives — with a focus on the real situations you're most likely to face in your workplace.

Assessment

This course has two assessment components

Online knowledge assessment: Completed as part of your pre-course learning via the online platform. This includes multiple-choice, short answer, and scenario-based questions covering first aid principles, emergency response, CPR, asthma and anaphylaxis management, and workplace incident reporting. You must complete all online assessment tasks before attending the practical session.

Face-to-face practical assessment: During the practical workshop, you will demonstrate your ability to safely and effectively respond to simulated emergency scenarios. This will involve:

  • Demonstrating an emergency action plan and managing an unconscious breathing casualty
  • Demonstrating uninterrupted adult, child, and infant CPR for a minimum of 2 minutes for at least 5 cycles
  • Attaching and following the prompts of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Providing a verbal handover report to the first response team using the IMISTAMBO or ISBAR format
  • Participating in a post-incident debrief and evaluation of own performance

All assessments are conducted in a supportive environment with guidance from your assessor. You will have opportunities to practise each skill before being assessed.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) recommends that CPR competence (which is a core skill of this course), be refreshed at least every 12 months to stay current with best practice and guidelines. Because competency changes over time and requires regular updating, Nexa Training views RPL (which might accept older evidence) as not suitable for ensuring candidates have current, up-to-date First Aid and CPR skills.

Accordingly RPL is NOT offered to candidates of this course.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should complete this course?

HLTAID012 is designed for anyone working in education and care settings, including childcare workers, early childhood educators, outside-school-hours care staff, family day care providers, and school support staff. It meets ACECQA requirements for approved first aid, asthma, and anaphylaxis training.

What is the difference between HLTAID011 and HLTAID012?

HLTAID011 (Provide First Aid) is the general first aid course. HLTAID012 includes everything in HLTAID011, plus additional training specific to infants and children in education and care settings — including child pain assessment, febrile convulsions, and education and care regulations.

How long does the course take?

The course includes approximately 5 hours of online pre-course learning and 7 hours of face-to-face practical training, for a total of around 12 hours. You must complete the course within 3 months of commencing.

How long is the certification valid?

Your HLTAID012 Statement of Attainment is valid for 3 years. The CPR component (HLTAID009) must be refreshed every 12 months, as recommended by the Australian Resuscitation Council.

What certification will I receive?

On successful completion, you will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting. This includes HLTAID009 (Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), HLTAID010 (Provide Basic Emergency Life Support) and HLTAID011 (Provide First Aid).

Is this course suitable for Victorian education workers?

HLTAID012 meets ACECQA requirements for early childhood and care settings nationally. However, if you work in a Victorian school environment, you may also need to complete 22578VIC (Course in First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis) to meet Ministerial Order 706 requirements. Contact us to discuss your specific needs.

Do I need to be physically fit?

You need to be able to perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on a manikin on the floor, including chest compressions and rescue breaths. This involves sustained kneeling, bending, and physical effort. If you have any injuries or conditions that may affect this, contact us before enrolling.

Is RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) available?

RPL is not offered for this course. The Australian Resuscitation Council recommends that CPR competence — a core skill of this course — be refreshed every 12 months. Because competency standards change over time, Nexa Training considers RPL unsuitable for ensuring candidates have current, up-to-date first aid and CPR skills.

What do I need to bring to the practical session?

Bring a valid photo ID, wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe footwear suitable for physical activity (you will be kneeling and working on the floor), and ensure your online pre-course learning is completed before attending.

Where is the practical training held?

Face-to-face practical training is delivered at our Brisbane training centre. 1/11 Buchanan Road, Banyo, 4014

How much does the course cost?

The course is $140 (GST free), which includes all online learning materials, face-to-face training, assessment, and your Statement of Attainment.
