22702VIC – Course in the Management of Asthma Risks and Emergencies in the Workplace

22578VIC – Course in First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis

Learn to recognise and respond to asthma emergencies and anaphylaxis — Victorian accredited training with scenario-based practical assessment in Brisbane.

Course details

This combined course covers two Victorian accredited qualifications — asthma emergency management and anaphylaxis first aid — delivered together as a single enrolment.

Asthma (22702VIC) teaches you to recognise and respond to asthma emergencies across all age groups (adults, children, and infants), administer reliever medication using a pMDI and spacer, manage escalating emergencies, and develop workplace asthma risk management strategies. Content follows the National Asthma Council Australia (NAC) Asthma First Aid protocol.

Anaphylaxis (22578VIC) teaches you to recognise the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis, administer adrenaline auto-injectors (EpiPen and Anapen), follow ASCIA Action Plans, manage insect and tick-related reactions, and develop anaphylaxis risk minimisation and management strategies. Content follows the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) guidelines.

Both courses include emergency first aid response skills and a risk management and post-incident review component, giving you practical competence in both recognition and prevention.

Delivered by Nexa Training in Brisbane, Queensland.

  • Complete written and verbal assessment tasks including incident documentation and a facilitated risk management discussion

The face-to-face practical component runs for approximately 4 hours across both courses.

If you have any condition that may affect your ability to participate, please contact us at admin@nexatraining.au before enrolling so we can discuss reasonable adjustments that may be available.

Equipment Supplied

You will be supplied with all relevant equipment including:

  • Adrenaline auto-injector trainer devices (EpiPen and Anapen trainers)
  • Placebo asthma reliever medication inhaler devices (pMDI trainers)
  • Spacer devices — adult size and infant/child size with mask

Assessments

Online assessment: Knowledge assessments completed through our online learning platform for both asthma and anaphylaxis, covering recognition, response protocols, risk management, and relevant guidelines through a combination of multiple-choice, true/false, short answer, and video response questions.

Practical assessment — Asthma (22702VIC): You will respond to four simulated asthma emergency scenarios of increasing complexity:

  • Child mild asthma in a school setting — assessment, action plan interpretation, reliever administration
  • Adult severe asthma in a workplace — emergency escalation, NAC 4×4 protocol, handover to paramedics
  • Infant asthma in an outdoor setting — infant-specific technique using spacer with mask
  • Adult asthma with complicating factors — adapting technique when standard approach is not effective

Following the scenarios, you will complete post-incident documentation and participate in a facilitated risk management discussion drawing on your own workplace context.

Practical assessment — Anaphylaxis (22578VIC): You will respond to two simulated anaphylaxis scenarios:

  • Food or general allergen-triggered anaphylaxis — ASCIA Action Plan interpretation, EpiPen administration, casualty management, handover
  • Insect or tick-triggered anaphylaxis — tick removal technique, Anapen administration, ongoing management

Following the scenarios, you will complete a post-incident review using a digital reporting form and review sample risk management documentation including an Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan, risk minimisation strategy, and communication plan.

All assessments are conducted in a supportive environment. You will have the opportunity to observe demonstrations and practise techniques before being assessed.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Asthma and anaphylaxis management skills require regular updating to stay current with changing clinical guidelines, medication devices, and emergency response protocols. Because competency in these areas changes over time, Nexa Training views RPL (which might accept older evidence) as not suitable for ensuring candidates have current, up-to-date emergency response and risk management skills.

Accordingly RPL is NOT offered to candidates of this course.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should complete this course?

This course is designed for anyone who may need to respond to asthma emergencies or anaphylaxis in their workplace. It is particularly relevant for childcare educators, school staff, outside school hours care workers, family day care educators, camp and recreation staff, and anyone working in environments where children or adults may be at risk.

Is this a Victorian requirement for school staff?

Yes. Under Ministerial Order 706, all Victorian school staff who have direct contact with students are required to hold current asthma and anaphylaxis management training. These courses (22702VIC and 22578VIC) meet that requirement. Some interstate schools and education services also accept these Victorian accredited courses — check with your employer or regulatory authority.

What is the difference between this course and HLTAID012?

This course focuses specifically on asthma and anaphylaxis management — including both emergency response and risk management/prevention. HLTAID012 is a comprehensive first aid course for education and care settings that covers CPR, choking, bleeding, and other emergencies as well as asthma and anaphylaxis. If your workplace requires a full first aid certificate AND asthma/anaphylaxis training, you may need both.

Are asthma and anaphylaxis covered separately or together?

They are two separate Victorian accredited courses (22702VIC for asthma and 22578VIC for anaphylaxis) delivered together as one combined enrolment. You will receive a Statement of Attainment for each course on successful completion. The combined workshop covers both courses in one session.

How long does the course take?

The course includes approximately 4 hours of online pre-course learning (2 hours for each course) and a combined face-to-face practical workshop of approximately 4 hours, for a total of around 8 hours. You must complete the course within 3 months of commencing.

How long is the certification valid?

Anaphylaxis (22578VIC) — best practice recommends refresher training every 2 years, with annual hands-on practice of adrenaline injector technique. Asthma (22702VIC) — Victorian schools require refresher training every 3 years under Ministerial Order 706. Some employers may require more frequent renewal. Check your specific workplace or regulatory requirements.

Is this course physically demanding?

No. This course is scenario-based and does not involve physically demanding tasks like CPR on the floor. You will need to demonstrate the use of adrenaline auto-injector and inhaler devices, participate in role-play scenarios, and complete written and verbal assessment tasks.

What certification will I receive?

On successful completion, you will receive two Statements of Attainment: one for 22702VIC (Course in the Management of Asthma Risks and Emergencies in the Workplace) covering VU24021 and VU24022, and one for 22578VIC (Course in First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis) covering VU23090 and VU23091.

What do I need to bring to the practical session?

Bring a valid photo ID and ensure your online pre-course learning for both courses is completed before attending the practical workshop.

Where is the practical training held?

Face-to-face practical training is delivered at our training centre in Brisbane, Queensland. 1/11 Buchanan Road, Banyo, 4104

How much does the course cost?

The combined course is $180 (GST free), which includes all online learning materials, face-to-face training, assessment, and both Statements of Attainment.

Can I do just asthma or just anaphylaxis?

These courses are currently offered as a combined enrolment only. Most workplaces that require one also require the other, so the combined course provides better value and convenience.
