Who Needs Asbestos Awareness Training?

Under Australian WHS regulations, asbestos awareness training is required for anyone whose work could disturb asbestos-containing materials (ACMs). This includes:

  • Electricians working in ceiling cavities and wall spaces
  • Plumbers, gas fitters, and air-conditioning installers
  • Carpenters, joiners, and plasterers
  • Demolition and construction workers
  • Painters and decorators
  • Maintenance and repair workers
  • Solar panel installers
  • Insulation installers
  • Site managers and supervisors
  • Emergency services workers

If your team works on buildings constructed before 1990, asbestos awareness training isn't optional — it's a legal requirement.

What You'll Learn

1. Asbestos and Your Health

How asbestos exposure happens. The health risks — including asbestosis, mesothelioma, and lung cancer. Why even brief exposure matters.

2. Identifying Asbestos-Containing Materials

How to recognise ACMs in cladding, roofing, wall linings, fencing, flooring, electrical backing boards, and other common locations. What to do — and what not to do — if you find it.

3. Legal Obligations Under WHS

Your responsibilities under Work Health and Safety regulations. Reporting requirements, restrictions on disturbing ACMs, and what your PCBU must have in place (asbestos registers, management plans).

4. Risk Management and Safe Work Practices

Asbestos removal licensing requirements. Risk controls, health surveillance, and the safe work procedures that keep you and your crew protected.

About This Course

Asbestos was widely used in Australian construction and building materials until the late 1980s. It's in homes, schools, commercial buildings, and infrastructure across the country. When asbestos-containing materials are disturbed — during renovations, maintenance, or demolition — microscopic fibres become airborne. Breathing those fibres in causes serious diseases, including asbestosis (lung scarring), mesothelioma, and other cancers.

This 2-hour online course gives you the essential knowledge to identify asbestos risks on site and work safely around ACMs. It's built for the way tradies actually learn — short modules, HD video, interactive content, and no corporate waffle.

This course does not qualify you for an asbestos removal licence. If your work involves removing ACMs, you'll need a Class A or Class B licence from your state or territory WHS regulator.

Meets WHS asbestos awareness requirements for: QLD, NSW, VIC, TAS, NT, and WA.

Does not cover: ACT (which has separate requirements).
